Learn Pilates fundamentals with Susan

It might be cooling down outside but C-Life has a new winter workshop to turn up the heat and get you sweating – Pilates Workshop with Susan will be running over the next two Sundays, 2 June & 9 June 10-11.30am.

Susan Clavijo has been a teaching Pilates and yoga for the past 33 years. Aside from her group sessions at C-Life, she is also the instructor for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. We sat down with Susan for a quick chat on what to expect in her upcoming workshops.

What’s the benefits of holding these sessions?

I really want to spread more awareness of Pilates and the wonderful health benefits it offers. There is a myth that it is just stretching on a mat but it’s so much more than that. It is very dynamic and fitness orientated, helping shape and tone muscles for greater strength and flexibility. It requires total mind and body control which builds discipline and resilience.

What can attendees expect to learn?

Well the first workshop is called Pilates for Everyone and I mean it’ll be for everyone. I’ll be going through the history as well as Pilates principles as set out by the founder of Pilates, Joseph Pilates. We’ll go through the basic understanding of core Pilates moves and how to apply them based on your fitness and skill level.

Pilates movement is a universal practice for everyone as long as you know how to tailor it to your body’s needs.

So attendees won’t be building up a sweat?

Oh they certainly will! The last 30 minutes will be a ‘Powerlattes by Susan’ workout which I created from my 33 years of teaching and instructing in Pilates and yoga. It’s a more contemporary take on traditional Pilates; more dynamic, fast and fluid, and very challenging. You’ll definitely be sweating so I recommend a towel and a bottle of water.

And the second session, ‘Props and Pilates’, on Sunday 9 June?

We will begin by repeating some of the Pilates fundamentals that we learned the week before to refresh and help it stick in your mind. Then we’ll move on to introducing the 3 props that is usually used in Pilates – the mini ball, the ring and the foam roller. They target different muscles so we’ll be exploring how to incorporate them into practice.

The last 30 minutes will be another ‘Powerlattes by Susan’ workshop.

Sign up for these workshops at C-Life Reception. $20 per session
